Week 6 (FEB 16)
Back on track
This week started really well and it's been productive. On Monday we were flattered to have an industry visit, I started working harder and the desert of the week - Valentine's day!
Industry Visit
For the last couple of weeks, I was struggling to be productive and inspired and that is the struggle that everyone has from time to time,
it doesn't matter how long you work in this industry. On Monday Dambuster Studios paid a visit to our University and it was so useful! I talked to really talented people. First, Holly, an environment artist showed me good stuff on Artstation that is related to my FMP. She commented on my last project later and give me some advice on which projects should be taken away from my Portfolio. We spoke about my level and she helped me to decide whats necessarily and what is not.
She is more in interiors and I was asking a lot of hard-surface and sci-fi related questions, so she told her co-worker to check on me later. He is a Senior-Environment Artist in Dambuster - Philip. What a great guy! We spoke for half an hour probably! He helped me to sort out my thoughts about this project, he identified strengths and weaknesses and put me back on track. All the critique was so helpful it all the mistakes I've made in my previous project looked so obvious when he pointed it. I can not say how much appreciate this kind of feedback. It is so good to talk with people from the industry.
Production Line
Finally, I moved forward with my production line. I've set the camera to capture my progress and it looks great so far!
Assets
As you can see, the production line is getting there. I almost developed my production system and did a basic block-outs of my most important models:
- Rails to create a path of production line;
- Robot Hanger that holds robot from rails and transfers it;
- Robot Carrier that holds a robot when it is on the ground;
- Robot or Product as I'm calling it;
- Robotic Arm that mounts and welds.
Usually, the automotive industry uses these robots to keep their product mobile and it is amazing to watch how the cars are made. Every move is so subtle and perfect. It's like perfect choreography in ballet. Hopefully, my robots will do amazing work and I will be able to transfer the same emotion to a player.
Down below you can see shot from above and how everything is looking so far. I've made a huge rearrangement of my UE4 assets in the level. Now every part is in a folder-> folder-> and it is so easy to hide the roof or the walls for a great screenshot!
And when you hide everything you can clearly see my coloured layout.
Production plan:
I am still cracking my head how my production should look like and how many stops/stages I have to develop. So far, I have this:
Robot_Carrier brings the legs;
Robot_Hanger brings the torso and arms;
- 1st stop: hips
don't lieis placed on top of the legs; - 2nd stop: torso is placed on the hips;
- 3rd stop: the head is mounted on robots body;
- 4th stop: arms are welded to the body;
The robots take U-turn towards the inspection. It is a quite closed space with some windows that will show some parts of action;- 5th stop: inspection. Robotic arms are moving around the product with UV lights and cameras;
6th stop: ???
After that, the product goes towards the bunch of computers to get the operating system installed.
- 6th stop: the OS instalment;
I was thinking to make an area where the finalised product should be stored. I am thinking about some pallet with 4-12 robots. Later, the pallet will be picked up by a forklift and uploaded into a lorry.
Well, that is my ecosystem and hopefully, I will finalise it and make it work. I would look amazing with this kind of animation and production going on.
